Program Description

The Computer and Network Support Technician program will give learners skills and knowledge in computer hardware and software needed to become a support technician in a networked environment. Learners will gain a basic knowledge of electronics, computer programming, software and hardware that make up different computer systems and networks. Learners will also further develop customer service, interpersonal communications and teamwork skills through group work, projects and a field placement. Included in the curriculum are courses in electronics, computer hardware, data communications, networks and programming. Learners will be able to install and test systems and support and maintain the ongoing use of the systems. Emphasis is on current network technologies, protocols, systems, and programming. Learners will also use and manage operating systems such as UNIX and Windows. More than one vendor's product line is covered and learners will develop skills in making the products work together for internetworking. Diagnosing and resolving hardware and software conflicts with appropriate tools will be emphasized.

Graduates of this program work in both large and small organizations. Their functions could include installing application software, training others and integrating applications with computer systems. They may work as a member of a team to analyse, setup, install, upgrade, maintain application systems, and troubleshoot networked computers.
