Program Description
|
The Systems Analyst program develops and deploys leading-edge technology solutions for small, medium and large-scale businesses. This program culminates with a senior term in which students and their team develop and deliver a commercially viable business systems prototype for a real client. This is a unique 3-year, co-op program that develops student's skills through practical experience and innovative courses in systems design and implementation, programming, networking, database and web technologies. Students will be prepared academically and experientially through a series of courses and co-op placements, which feature, systems analysis and design using a computer-assisted software engineering (CASE) tool, systems administration in the UNIX environment, programming with Visual Basic and Java, database design and implementation with Access and Oracle, Web technologies using various scripting languages. |

Graduates of the program find employment in a variety of industries including: major financial institutions, aerospace, government, high tech and a wide range of medium to large manufacturing and service companies. Many are hired immediately following completion of the program by companies where they completed co-op terms.

Employment for this occupation is expected to grow more rapidly then the average of all occupations through the year 2005 as more businesses expand computerized operations and integrate new technologies, such as e-business. Job seekers with skills in network administration, programming languages, internet software, database software, relational database management system, main frame software, multimedia software and many other applications, should have excellent opportunities of finding employment. The demand for networking to facilitate the sharing of information, the expansion of client/server environments, and a need for professionals who can develop and support internet, internet and worldwide web applications will contribute to the rising demand for Systems Analyst. The variety of skills needed in this occupation has prompted the Software Human Resource Council to develop occupational skills profiles for employment with 24 job streams under seven general job categories for the Canadian software industry. |
