Program Description

Studies in this field will
prepare students for a career as an air conditioning, refrigeration
and gas technician. Students will have acquired a broad knowledge
of the design, installation and service techniques of heating
and air conditioning systems in residential, commercial, and industrial
buildings. They will be able to size, select and maintain equipment
for building comfort and industrial purposes and know how to use
various industry standards. This program gives the students a
broad and intensive knowledge of the design, operation and installation
of energy systems for residential, commercial and industrial complexes. |

Career Opportunities
|
Graduate will be capable of
applying engineering principles and conventions to achieve optimum
energy efficiency through a process of evaluation, monitoring,
DDC control, assessment and corrective action. Graduates of this
program can look forward to employment opportunities mainly in
the commercial and industrial sectors as well as in government
departments at the various levels. Graduates will be sought by
heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration manufacturers,
consulting engineers, architects, process industries, wholesalers,
distributors, mechanical contractors, building owners, school
boards, chain stores, energy management firms and property management
companies. |

Employment for this occupation
is expected to grow more rapidly than the average for all occupations
through the year 2005. Many employers report difficulties in finding
qualified workers to fill vacant positions. As the population
and economy grow, the demand for this occupational group will
increase due to the installation of new, more efficient air conditioning
and refrigeration systems. Much of the work will be in maintenance
and repair which usually remains relatively stable. As in most
other trades, there is an increasing need for computer literacy
and the ability to operate computer-controlled equipment. |
