Program Description

This program will give students a comprehensive education in the design theory and technical and aesthetic skills required by the jewellery and metals industry for entry level positions. This program initiates student to create functional and aesthetic jewellery and metalwork. And also makes them familiar with styles in jewellery and metals from ancient to contemporary times. This program provides the student with skills needed to produce and repair jewellery, flatware and hollowware. Students explore traditional and contemporary techniques, materials and concerns as they move forward in the program and also they are provided with conceptual, creative, critical and technical support and a stimulating variety of perspectives and approaches. The emphasis in Semesters 1 and 2 is on basic information and techniques as related to jewellery. Advanced jewellery techniques will be learned as well as hollowware and flatware in Semester 3 and 4. At the end of either Semester 2 or 4, a co-op work term is mandatory. The students will acquire four months of hands-on paid, co-operative work experience with industries who are interested in these skills. The co-operative plan links theory and practice very effectively.

Career Opportunities

The graduates will be introduced to accounting and business practices suitable for small business, which will allow them to seek out employment with an existing manufacturer. As well the graduates will be reliably able to demonstrate their skills to the production aspects of the industry. Graduates will be able to find services in jewellery manufacturing, jewellery retailing and custom studios. Moreover they are capable to work in design, production and/or retailing within the industry.
