Program Description

This program will teach students the business of designing, manufacturing and marketing of packaging. They will learn computer design, graphic design, three-dimensional design (corrugated, paperboard and plastics), and the relationship of design objectives to technological and marketing requirements, materials and their limitations, and the economics of the packaging industry. The program emphasizes the psychology of colour and design, product protection, government regulations affecting the package, printing and reproduction processes, packaging CAD, and the impact of consumerism on the design process.

Career Opportunities

Package Designers work in design studios and in the packaging industry. Graduates could specialize in structural design for corrugated and paper board plants or could work for design studios in packaging design. They could produce computer pre-press artwork for printing houses or photo engravers. Some graduates move on into sales, research or marketing for large packaging houses and advertising agencies.

Employment for this occupation is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through the year 2005. Replacement needs will create a large number of job openings yearly because of the large size of this occupation group. Computer-based workstations have long replaced drawing boards. More and more, people in these occupations rely on computers to present concepts to clients, produce final designs and manage projects. The increased range of media presents new opportunities for these workers as well as the need to keep up with the latest trends in technology. People in this occupation increasingly use computerized page layout and graphic design systems in their work. Multimedia presentations and animated graphics are two types of work made far easier by computers. Web-site design may offer good opportunities for graphic designers and illustrators, especially those with multimedia skills.
